Greg Buttay è nato nel 1980 in Francia, nell'ex città siderurgica di Longwy. Durante i suoi primi anni di vita, ha visto cadere e scomparire fabbriche, in una città dove fino ad allora il duro lavoro aveva permesso a molte famiglie di vivere, e che, scomparendo, hanno reso questa città una città morta, che gli ha lasciato l'impressione di essere nata in un mondo in crisi che arrivava da tutte le parti. Così ha trovato rapidamente rifugio nella storia, nell'arte, nei romanzi, nella poesia e nella sua immaginazione. È stato quindi naturale che all'età di sedici anni si sia avvicinato alla fotografia, che è la simbiosi tra arte e tecnica. Dai circoli fotografici ai corsi di audiovisivo, ha integrato una scuola di fotografia, la Félicien Rops di Namur, dove si è diplomato in arte e tecniche visive applicate alla fotografia dopo un esame davanti a una giuria.
In seguito ha lavorato nell'immagine commerciale, sia per privati che per aziende, in particolare nel campo dell'architettura. Per molto tempo si è definito un "artigiano", non vedendo nulla di peggiorativo in questo campo, ma consapevole che tutta la qualità e l'alto grado di esigenza che poteva mettere in queste immagini non le rendeva meno commerciali. Eppure, dentro di sé, sentiva il fuoco che brucia e agita l'anima e che rende un artista.
La sua nascita nella produzione artistica, il suo primo vero contatto con la fotografia più artistica, è stato quando gli è stato chiesto di creare una serie di immagini "Destigmatizzare la disabilità" in collaborazione con l'associazione Gem54. Questa serie di immagini è stata la base per una mostra itinerante in Lorena (Francia). Ha anche approfittato di eventi internazionali come il "Mondial Air Ballons" per creare un altro tipo di fotografia.
È a Napoli, durante i suoi viaggi, che l'anima di questo artista rinasce pienamente. Questi lunghi anni di pratica fotografica, di perfezionamento e di esplorazione, gli hanno permesso di sviluppare un approccio, un modo molto personale di vedere il mondo e le persone che lo abitano, con uno stile come una scrittura che lo ritrascrive e che gli è proprio.
Greg Buttay was born in 1980, in France, in the former steel town of Longwy. During his early years, he saw factories fall and disappear, in a town where up until then hard work had allowed many families to live, and which, by disappearing, made this town a dead city, which left him with the impression of having been born into a world in crisis that came from all sides. So he quickly found refuge in history, art, novels, poetry and his imagination. It was therefore quite natural that at the age of sixteen he took up photography, which is the symbiosis of art and technique. From photo clubs to audiovisual courses, he integrated a school of photography, Félicien Rops in Namur, where he graduated in art and visual techniques applied to photography after an examination before a jury.
He then worked in the commercial image, either for individuals or for companies, particularly in architecture. For a long time he defined himself as a "craftsman", seeing nothing pejorative in this field, but aware that all the quality and the high degree of requirement that he could put in these images did not make them any less commercial. Yet, within himself, he felt the fire that burns and stirs the soul, and that makes an artist.
His birth into art production, his first, real, contact with more artistic photography, was when he was asked to create a series of images "Destigmatising Disability" in collaboration with the association Gem54. This series of images was the basis for a travelling exhibition in Lorraine (France). He also took advantage of international events such as the "Mondial Air Ballons" to create another type of photography.
It is in Naples, during his travels, that this artist's soul was fully reborn. These long years of practicing photography, of perfecting and exploring, now allowed him to develop an approach, a very personal way of seeing the world and the people who live in it, with a style like a writing to retranscribe it which is his own.
